Sam Barfield
Memorial Regatta
AUG
30 & 31 - Wrightsville
Beach , NC
You
are invited to celebrate the memory of our long time Race
Committee Chairman and Photographer, Sam Barfield. We will
do this by doing what Sam loved, by racing sailboats and getting
together for a GREAT Pre-Race Meeting/Party with post race
raft-up with awards and BYOB Celebration. Details in the NOR
pdf file below!
In
addition to his ties to WBORA, Sam was a lifelong member of
the Carolina Yacht Club where he worked hard to ensure that
local and out of town sailors would enjoy professionally run
regattas. Sam also was the NC-PHRF chairman, which established
keelboat uniform handicap ratings used in North Carolina.
Sam was also integral to both race committee and general organization
of NCYRA, the annual Memorial Day regatta in Beaufort.

July 12, 2008•Sea Buoy@12pm
Happy 4th! If
you were on the beach, you saw more fireworks than Coney Island
on a Saturday. If you were out on the water, lets hope it
was in the ocean with GREAT wind and fewer loons in power
boats hoisting brews, not sails. Up next, see the RACE/CRUISE#2
NOR along with the 2008
WBORA OFFICERS here at your beck and call. Let's see
a great turnout for Race/Cruise 2! How can you not WANT to
raftup?

Seidel Wrightsville Beach-Beaufort Race
May
22, 2008 ~ Wrightsville Beach, NC
This is looking
to be a BIG event with some great competition! You knew it
as the Wachovia Cup, WGOR, Offshore Race, or simply the Inlet
to Inlet race. Regardless, it's the premier distance race
in North Carolina, won by some of the best sailors in the
Southeast. In 2008, we have some great boats planning to attend.

The
current
scratch sheet consists of two Cape Fear 38's (Tangent &
Limited Inventory), an Amel 53 (Sundance), and J40 (Coast
to Coast).
Cruisers race a shorter course, and usually are treated with
an SE to SW wind (Except last year when it blew on the nose
at 15 to 25).
We are hopeful that The Edge, NY Times, and Adios will make
the race to defend their record.

for a great cause, supporting the fight against Leukemia and
Lymphomas. Many of us have attended this event for years and
it's always a first rate regatta. The Cape
Fear Yacht Club will be hosting the event. Don't miss

March '07 Edition
WBORA in general,
and Murray Seidel (Sundance) in particular, made the cover
and contents of the March 2007 edition of Wrightsville
Beach Magazine.
Check
it out if you happen to wander by the many stands located
around the beach. See the cover below and follow the link

Perchance to Win

Some
interesting ideas proposed by Murray concerning the lack of
involvement and general apathy surrounding WBORA in relation
to the general public (and even those with sailboats).
Murray makes some compelling points. In addition, the
article contains some excellent shots of past WBORA action
along with more shots of Sundance on the water. It's well
worth finding a copy. If not, jump to the link above
and read the Flash based version within the March issue in
the archives.

Participation
is the key to a great future for WBORA. Winning is not everything,
lots boats out there improving their skills followed by good
fellowship at socials and raft ups makes sailing fun. We have
a lot of experienced crew out here looking for rides. Skippers,
that can be great way to learn more about sailing. Also, the
old hands around the club are full of advice and help for
the less experienced.
